AUGUST EXHIBITION AT GALLERY A3

“In these divisive times, art can ask questions and suggest answers—and give artists an opportunity to speak through their artwork, whether it be overt commentary, thought-provoking, healing, contemplative, timeless, or contemporary,” says exhibit coordinator Paula Hite. The juror, Billy Myers, is the Artistic Director and Curator of the Art for the Soul Gallery. An Opening Reception will be on Thursday, August 7, 5–8:00 pm, and an online Art Forum, open to the public, is scheduled for Thursday, August 21, at 7:30 pm.

Gallery A3’s Annual Juried Show offers artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in a downtown Amherst gallery. In turn, it gives the community a chance to see work by established artists who may be well-known in the area along with the opportunity to discover emerging artists and others who may be exhibiting their work for the first time in western Massachusetts.

The exhibit showcases 45 works by 37 artists from New England and New York, and the media include drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, sculpture, mixed media, and fiber works. “Gallery A3 began more than two decades ago, as artists in the community responded to the tragedy of the attacks of 9/11,” Hite states. “Now, with our 10th Annual Juried Show coming at another momentous time in our country’s history, it is exciting to see how the responses to the theme of UNITED WE STAND range from personal to political, abstract to conceptual, and humorous to iconic imagery.”

STATEMENT FROM THE JUROR

Judging an exhibition is a challenging task.

The parameters and vision behind the work, along with the connections woven into a collective narrative, shaped my evaluation. Did my chosen theme prompt a literal response, or did it fall into cliche? I sought subtle impacts — humor, irony, or layers beneath the surface.

From a subjective perspective, it was the content's nuances and recurring motifs throughout the selection that guided my overall assessment. The dialogue created by the artwork offered a deeper narrative, one that transcended individual works and united them as a part of a cohesive whole.
